About the Laguna:
Laguna de Apoyo is a clean, blue, and thermally vented 48-square kilomenter body of water contained inside the crater of the Apoyo Volcano (think big warm clean lake!).Laguna de Apoyo is one of Nicargua’s most beautiful natural wonders (and a great place to vacation or backpack). For anyone traveling through Nicaragua it should not be missed.
There are many Lagunas throughout the coutry, but none equal this one as it is still clean enough to swim in and very close to other major cities in Nicaragua. It is a great place to rest, relax, swim, kayak and recharge after some hard traveling, or to just spend a day lounging in the water and sun.
There is no real town along the waterfront of the Laguna, so if you need to run to the bank, buy some sunscreen, or make a phone call it is best to do it in town before you go. There are four small local restaurants that serve fish and generally typical Nicaraguan food and and cold beers. These local restaurants are located conveniently in front of the public beach (not much). The entrance to the Laguna is located between Granada and Masaya on the Caraterra Masaya, and it is easy to get to by bus or taxi – even from Managua. There is also a good selection of places to spend the night.
This site is a general informational site for anyone thinking about traveling to Nicaragua and speciically the Laguna De Apoyo. See our Directions Page for more specific info.
Most visitors will be happy to lounge in the warm blue waters, relax with a book or soak up the sun at the Laguna. If you are spending only the day in the Laguna it is worth paying one of the local ‘hospidajes’ (hostels) with water access a day use fee ($5-$6 USD as of early 2008). This will usually include use of kayays, restrooms/changing room, floating dock, water access, and beach chairs. Most usually sell beer, snacks and may offer meals as well. You can also look into taking a short scuba dive with the Proyecto Ecologico/Spanish School, a nature walk or small hike, or even some Spanish lessons. For those traveling on the cheap there is a public beach next to the local restaurants but it is basically only water access and you may find yourself sharing it with some locals washing their clothes by hand or a group of locals dining. See ourHostels/Accomodations Nicaragua page for details on day use, and other activities.
History of the Laguna De Apoyo:
Imagine a giant volcano imploding on itself and then filling with water and you have the general history of the Laguna De Apoyo. This is what is said to have happened over 20,000 years ago that created the Laguna De Apoyo. When the cone of the volcano imploded it created a huge crater and over time filled with both rain and subterranean water. It is also referred to as the Apoyo Lagoon, Apoyo Crater, and simply La Laguna if you are close by.
Nicaragua has a chain of Volcanos that run through it from North to South. Laguna De Apoyo is located between Volcano Mombacho, which is to the south, and Volcano Masaya to the North. You can see the tip of Mombacho from the shores of the Laguna and it usually will have some clouds swirling about the top of it.
When you visit you can almost picture the volcano imploding as the walls of the entire crater are relatively steep and lush with huge body of water in the middle. The deepest measured point is 200 meters, which makes it the lowest point in Central America. Despite this the water is thermally vented and remains a nice temperature all year round. It is also one of the cleanest bodies of water, if not the cleanest, and has a huge potential for recreation and ecotourism. As of now the impact on tourism and development has not drastically impacted the overall health of the Laguna from an environmental standpoint and we urge you to tread lightly and help preserve this natural resource both for others and for the Nicaraguans who call it home.
